If you drove past the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field on Saturday or Sunday, you wouldn\’t recognize it today. It\’s like a ghost town now–the hoof beats of the 650 horses a mere echo in the valley. But what an 11-day ride it was! Opening week ended with over 50 riders (combined) competing in the C. Jarvis/Assured Partners Mini Hunter Derby and the Mini Prix sponsored by Mercedes of Willoughby|Volvo of Willoughby, Leikin Companies. Yesterday, Teri Kessler won the 52nd Annual $50,000 Cleveland Grand Prix out of 20 riders on a very tough course. No rider had a clear jump-off and only a handful completed the opening round clear to make the jump off. Ms. Kessler won with the fastest 4-fault time on her horse, Lascana 3, who she trains and rides. She works with Pablo Barrios, 2016 Olympic equestrian who also entered the grand prix and finished 7th.
Jennifer Alfano took first and second places in the elegant $20,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Saturday night on Miss Lucy and Jersey Boy (respectively). Ms. Alfano won the international hunter derby in 2015 on Jersey Boy.
Only 364 days until the 2018 Cleveland Grand Prix! Start counting!
